THE REVIEW
I've been a long time Punisher fan since I started reading comics in the early 20's. Punisher, Captain America, the Avengers, and Ghost Rider were my main Marvel comics. I even love both Punisher movies to the extent that I watch them once a month. To be honest, I had no idea a Punisher series was gonna happen even after watching the second season of Daredevil. On 18th of November, I logged into my Netflix account and was shock-prised to see "Marvel's The Punisher". I literally booked off my entire weekend so I could binge-watch all 13 episodes over two days. I am somewhat biased though as I have been rooting for Punisher to get his own show since I saw him in Season 2 of Daredevil. Netflix's Punisher series kicks off after the events of Netflix's Daredevil Season 2. He was the highlight of that season.
Sound design is outstanding. Effects, score and track are seamlessly integrated into the story and characters, and raise the entire production!
I went with very high expectations into this series but got surprised positively. It's hard to believe this is a Marvel show. The show starts of kind of slowly(like any other Netflix shows), many people may even say there isn't much punishing in the early episodes but that's completely fine because the show takes that time to build up its characters very carefully. I felt very surprised by how well they portrayed Frank Castle's PTSD and the loss of his family. Frank Castle's character is shown as a husband, father and ultimately an obeying soldier who grows to love war and all its chaos. The show even gets to throw in some references to Scorsese's Taxi Driver, building a minor antagonist who never came back home, even after leaving the army. He starts to shine mid season and portrays a more radical and extreme counterpart to Castle, while sharing SOME of Castle's principles and values. All in all Marvel's Punisher delivers on many points where previous installments didn't deliver. The characters feel real, the violence feels gritty and dark but at the same time very fitting for the setting of the show. I'd recommend this show to anyone who liked season one of Daredevil and is a fan of The Punisher as a war torn anti hero.
All-in-all this is one of the best shows from the Marvel Netflix line up. And while I'm always going to be a bigger Punisher fan than a Daredevil one it still doesn't beat out season 1 of Daredevil for me (that one was just so solid from beginning to end), but it comes damn close.
I give it 9/10
